The Battle of The Gourmet Goat Farmer Cheeses

Here at The Gourmet Goat Farmer, when we say our cheeses will convert everyone to being a goat milk cheese lover, we’re not Kidding! Cheesy puns aside (okay, we promise this time), The Gourmet Goat Farmer team are on a mission to discover the best goat cheese and have put four of our delicious goat milk cheeses to the test.

Welcome to The Battle of The Cheeses.

An Introduction to Goat Milk Cheese

Often when discussing people’s preferences when it comes to cheese, goat milk cheese is not a firm favourite. Many squirm and state that their experiences are reminiscent of strong, off-putting, sour cheeses. To those people, we ask you to trust us. Our cheeses are all British, smooth, mild, and the perfect addition to your cheese board, or accompaniment to your favourite dish.

Goat milk contains lower levels of lactose (perfect for those that suffer from lactose intolerances), and more protein than cow’s milk, reflecting the benefits of goat milk cheese, and the beauty of selecting your goat milk cheese from a local source is that your cheesemaker can engineer the taste of the goat’s milk cheese to suit the British palette to achieve that smooth, mild taste that we just can’t get enough of.

Goat Cheeses at The Gourmet Goat Farmer

Created using the goats milk of happy, predominantly grass-fed flock of goats from the farms of the South West of England, our goat milk cheeses are made with the highest quality of goat’s milk and handcrafted for the perfect finish. We also aim to support British artisan cheesemakers in every cheese that we select, and we do just that.

Cheeses at The Gourmet Goat Farmer have been specially selected due to the taste of the cheese, but also primarily, the goat’s welfare. Whether you opt for hard goat cheese, crumbling goat cheese, pasteurised or unpasteurised goat milk cheese, here at The Gourmet Goat Farmer, we have the best goat cheeses to suit all tastes and preferences. But which goat milk cheese ranks as the champion?

Brightwell Ash Goat’s Cheese

Made by Oxfordshire’s Norton and Yarrow Cheese, the Brightwell Ash Goat’s Cheese is unique in its reputation as the only goat milk cheese at The Gourmet Goat Farmer, to be made from the goat milk of the farm’s very own herd of Anglo Nubian goats, and made at the very same location.

This unpasteurised, soft and crumbly cheese has been recognised for it’s the edible ash-based rind, which forefronts a silky texture and features notes of citrus and hazelnut. Perfect for pairing with our Fig and Honey Chutney and delicious spread across some fresh, warm bread, Norton and Yarrow Cheese’s Brightwell Ash Goat’s Cheese is the ideal addition to your dinner party cheese board and a fantastic introduction to milder, British goat milk cheese. It’s also a perfect finish to any dish, perhaps as a crumbly topping to a fresh garden salad.

Sinodun Hill Goat Milk Cheese

Our second cheese from Norton and Yatton Cheese, Sinodun Hill Goat Cheese brings a richer taste than it’s Norton and Yatton counterpart Brightwell Ash, and is the perfect addition to a rich, red wine or glass of Port.

This cheese’s mousse-like texture has been described as light and delicate, featuring a yoghurt flavouring.

Ticklemore Cheese

The Ticklemore Goat Cheese is a firm favourite and a necessary addition to this ultimate battle of the cheeses. First curated by Robin Congdon over forty years ago, Ticklemore Goat Cheese is made in beautiful Devon and has earned it’s reputation as an indulgent goat milk cheese that deserves a spot on every cheeseboard.

Here at The Gourmet Goat Farmer, our Ticklemore cheese is sourced from the prestigious Sharpam Estate in Devon, and is a fantastic goat milk cheese to add during cooking and as an accompaniment or starter with fresh bread and a glass of wine of choice.

Quickes Clothbound Goat Milk Cheese

Our Quicke’s Clothbound goat milk cheese collection features two gorgeous goat cheeses: The Goat’s Milk and The Oak Smoked.

This goat milk cheese is often voted as the most popular goat cheese due to its versatility and similarity to cheddar. As a hard goat cheese, our Quicke’s varieties are a great introduction to goat milk cheese and can be enjoyed grated or sliced, making this cheese the perfect dish-paired ingredient.

Handcrafted using goat’s milk sourced from the South West of England, our Quicke’s Clothbound cheese options are naturally matured, for up to six months, highlighting a delicious example of a well-aged goat milk cheese.

Summary

When selecting the best goat cheese from our specially-selected collection here at The Gourmet Goat Farmer, it’s a tough call. With a range of goat milk cheese to suit all palettes and tastes, each cheese offers itself as an ideal highlight to your dinner party cheese board, or as an introduction to the world of goat’s cheese.

Select our Norton and Yatton cheeses for a creamier and more unique experience, our Ticklemore Cheese for a classic taste of fine goat’s cheese, and explore our Quicke’s Clothbound goat milk cheese if you enjoy the taste and consistency of cheddar. The beauty of goat milk cheese is it’s versatility, so try pairing our cheeses with one of our delicious chutneys, as a finishing touch to your homemade classics such as lasagne or mac’n’cheese, and watch the compliments flood in.

The main thing to remember is that the best cheese for you is all about personal choice and preference. What may be the world’s tastiest goat cheese to one may not be to another, so give our specially selected cheeses a try and shop online at our Cheese and Dairy shop… or if you’re local, pop in and give us a visit! We’d love to see you and help you choose the best goats cheese for you.
